Mountain Biking in New Jersey

Revised edition

According to the National Parks Service, "Pending federal aprovals of the trails for biking, the trails at Blue Mountain Lakes are now closed to biking." (See the National Park Service's Delaware Water Gap web site for other biking routes in the park.)

Because of rampant vandalism to trail signs, the trail-marking scheme has been changed at Mercer County Park to a 4-color system rather than the alphabetical plan described in the book. SMART (Save Mercer and Ride the Trails) offers an updated overall map of the park on the group's web site. Other information contained in the Mountain Biking in New Jersey map remains accurate.

Maintenance on the trail at Six Mile Run Reservoir seems to have been a hit-or-miss affair of late. It might be best to call first to make sure the trail is passable before you travel out that way.

First edition

According to the National Parks Service, "Pending federal aprovals of the trails for biking, the trails at Blue Mountain Lakes are now closed to biking." (See the National Park Service's Delaware Water Gap Web site for other biking routes in the park.)

Trail usage has changedfor the Cheesequake and Washington Valley East rides.

A new two-mile section of the Patriot's Path has been completed between the Elizabeth D. Kay and the Bamboo Brook Environmental Centers in Chester, N.J., but it is closed to bikes.

Revisions to the West Essex Rail Trail:

Heading north from Verona (current starting point), reach the Pompton Ave. overpass. Go down stairs. Go left. At Myrtle Ave. traffic light (by the Exxon station) cross Pompton Ave. About 200' ahead on right turn onto Little Falls Rd. As the road makes a sharp curve to the left, look right for a footbridge that crosses the river ( you are now in Community Park). Follow yellow blazes to children's play area. Look right towards woods for a gravel dirt path and small footbridge. This is the connecting path to continue on the rail trail. Reach the rail trail and go left to continue.

Also ... the pathway around the Cedar Grove Reservoir is now closed and fenced off.

Back Roads Bicycling in Bucks County, Pa.

The Back Roads Bike Book

Bowman's Hill Wildlife Preserve, mentioned in the Pidcock Creek ride on page 46, no longer has mechanized guard gates to collect a $1 parking fee. At least for now, parking is free!

Bike Depot in Stockton, mentioned on page 23, has closed. To rent bikes in the area, contact New Hope Cyclery (215- 862-6888), the Lumberville Store (215-297-5388), or Freeman's Bicycle Shop in Frenchtown (908-996-7712).

Creek Road in Frenchtown, described as officially closed on page 41 of The Back Roads Bike Book, revised (second) edition, has been repaired and reopened. It is unpaved and prone to potholes for the first 1.5 miles.

Kiddle Cyclery in Buckingham, mentioned on page 47 of The Back Roads Bike Book, revised (second) edition, has been replaced by Evolution Pro Bike & Ski Shop. It has same address but a new phone number: (215) 794-9600.

The Washington Crossing ride directions on page 57 of The Back Roads Bike Book, revised (second) edition, and on page 51 of The Back Roads Bike Book, original edition, lists a turn onto Harbourton-Trenton Road. Like many roads in this area, this one goes by more than one name; the sign at the turn actually says Harbourton-Rocktown Rd.
