Located near what is arguably the highest point on the eastern seaboard (Mount Mitchell, elevation 266 feet), Hartshorne Woods and the adjacent Twin Lights loom as sentinels overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The New Jersey peak, located off Route 36 about 1.5 miles east of Hartshorne, rises right along the shoreline, offering wonderful views that reach as far as New York City.
Hartshorne can also boast or weep about its unofficial title as the facility most heavily used by bicyclists in the Monmouth County Park System. What nearby Huber Woods County Park has on a small scale, Hartshorne has in abundance. Its reputation as a first-class mountain-bike destination is well deserved.
