As the South Branch of the Raritan River winds its way through Hunterdon County, its demeanor changes, gradually at first, then abruptly south of the village of Califon. Rolling farmland and gently sloping banks give way to a rugged landscape as you enter the Ken Lockwood Gorge, aptly named after an environmental visionary who was instrumental in preserving the area.

For the next 2 miles, the landscape is characterized by jagged rock outcroppings and steep forested walls populated by evergreens. The once-placid Raritan changes its temperament as well as it rushes noisily over and around rocks and boulders of varying sizes and shapes. This section of the river is treasured as one of the state’s prime fly-fishing areas.

This route takes you beside the river and through the gorge via Raritan River Road, as well as above the gorge via the Columbia Rail Trail. The combination of a tree-shaded trail and the opportunity to enjoy the cooling effects of the river make this an ideal destination for a leisurely ride on a hot summer day. ...
